The History of Ventura, CA
The Chumash people were the original
inhabitants of the Ventura area, living along the coast and in the nearby
mountains for thousands of years. In 1782, the Spanish established Mission San
Buenaventura, which became an important center of agriculture, trade, and
religion. The mission was eventually secularized in the mid-1800s, and the land
was sold off to private owners. In 1866, the city of San Buenaventura was
officially incorporated, becoming one of the first cities in California. It
grew rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s, with the arrival of the
railroad and the development of the agriculture and oil industries. It has
become a vibrant city with a thriving downtown district, beautiful beaches, and
a rich cultural heritage.
Serra Cross in Ventura, CA
The Serra Cross is located on a hill overlooking Ventura and the Pacific Ocean. It stands 103 feet tall and is visible from many points in the city. The cross was first erected in 1782 by Father Junipero Serra, a Franciscan missionary who founded the nearby San Buenaventura Mission. It was originally made of wood until it was destroyed by a wildfire in 1971. Local residents then rallied to rebuild the cross as a symbol of the city's heritage and community spirit. The new cross was constructed in 1972 using steel and concrete and thousands of people came to witness its dedication.
